Bush Challenge course

| What can be so
challenging about the bush? Certainly apart from some increased
physical effort, most of our time out in nature is spent admiring and connecting to the unspoilt environment that surrounds us.
And this is nearly always so. But if a person should become lost or
in trouble out in unmarked terrain then a whole new and unexpected challenge
immediately arises... the challenge of survival. |

The Bush Challenge course is a fun and practical way to become involved in a series of activities that are closely associated with some fundamental survival skills in the bush. In completing these activities, members try their hand at building and using tools and materials commonly found or available in natural surrounds. As an introduction to the art of bush survival, participants gain an insight to the rules and priorities that should be adhered to under these situations. The techniques and ideas are drawn from traditional cultures that are thousands of years old and come from opposite ends of the globe: the Sami folk of Northern Europe and the Aboriginal people of Australia. Research and techniques published from modern leaders and examples in effective bush survival have also been consulted. The techniques and skills introduced form the basis for a competitive course of challenges, where members apply their capabilities against other sub-teams on the course to determine the best survivors in the group. Implications for dependency and support are interwoven as major themes to survival and have good relevance to team effectiveness.
